Singing and Book Reading Event August 2024
A Day of Song and Inspiration at Wild Acres
“You all made it such a nourishing and uplifting time, gentle and deep.”
On Saturday, August 24th, we held two amazing events at Wild Acres that celebrated the wonders of the natural world—even amidst heavy rain and grey skies! But spirits were certainly never dampened.
Singing with Sorrel
In the morning, 15 people were welcomed to Wild Acres with a warming drink, given time to meet each other, and introduced to the project. Most were new to Wild Acres, and several had not sung in a group before. Sorrel Wilde was just brilliant. Her playful, relaxed, and intuitive style of teaching quickly put everyone at ease. By the end of the morning, we had learned four beautiful songs and sung in harmony!
Singing outside, at one with nature, was a moving experience—particularly when we walked silently down to the brook. There, in a close circle, we sang about the healing nature of water and then enjoyed the amazing experience of a sound bath in the teepee.
No event at Wild Acres is complete without a delicious hot meal using freshly picked vegetables, and it was much appreciated by all. Indeed, all feedback was glowing and inspired by:
The morning was filled with laughter, harmony, and a sense of peace as voices blended with the sounds of nature.
Sorrel shared:
“Hello all and thank you again for coming to sing on Saturday. I arrived to some pretty meaty rain and had decided to have gratitude and thank the skies for the beautiful garden I’ve had this year with sorrel growing that didn’t bolt, and I’m so glad the clouds cleared for us as well!”
Participants gathered around, some bringing cushions and blankets for comfort, embracing the natural surroundings of Wild Acres. The workshop was a celebration of voices, nature, and community.
The songs we sang were:
- Put your roots down by Molly Hartwell.
- Rushing by Rev. Wendy Luella Perkins.
- The River, by Coco Love Alcorn.
- River River by Kavisha Mazella.

Book Reading with Doina Cornell
A few singers stayed for the afternoon and were joined by others to hear Doina Cornell reading from her new book, “Our Ocean’s Broken Heart.” Doina is well known to many as a district councillor for Dursley until earlier this year and leader of Stroud District Council until 2022.
This book details the experiences of a sailor as she voyaged across the ocean to areas of the Pacific and Arctic most threatened by climate change. Everyone was enthralled by her tales but also struck by the dreadful realities of climate change. She talked of whole islands slowly disappearing—populated by people with their own identity and culture.
Many of us give the ocean scant thought. Doina discussed the horrific amount of plastic pollution and the increased warming and CO2 being absorbed by the oceans. These combined factors impact the sea’s ability to support all life, including on land.
Being outside, looking across the meadow at the trees and wildflowers, felt really appropriate. Thanks to the Berkeley Climate Action Network for setting up their stall—all contributed to a fascinating afternoon.
The book is a must-read!
